👍OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has finalized a $6.5 billion deal to purchase io, an AI device startup created by Jony Ive, Apple’s former design leader. This all-stock deal, completed on July 9, 2025, marks OpenAI’s bold step into the hardware market, aiming to create innovative AI-powered devices.

Jony Ive, famous for designing iconic Apple products like the iPhone and iPad, co-founded io with a team of skilled engineers, many of whom previously worked at Apple. The acquisition brings io’s 55-member team into OpenAI, with Ive taking on a key role as group creative director.

His design firm, LoveFrom, will lead efforts to shape OpenAI’s future products, focusing on user-friendly, AI-driven technology. The deal, which began with a partnership in 2023, saw OpenAI initially owning 23% of io. Now, fully acquiring the startup, OpenAI plans to launch its first devices in 2026.

CEO Sam Altman emphasized that these products will not replace smartphones but will offer a fresh approach to how we interact with technology. “Jony’s unmatched design expertise will help us build tools that truly connect with people,” Altman said.

Despite a trademark dispute with IYO Inc. that briefly paused promotions, the acquisition is on track. This move signals OpenAI’s ambition to compete with tech giants like Apple and Google, potentially redefining personal technology with AI at its core.💯
